Uganda election: Yoweri Museveni blocks Facebook and Twitter, Kizza Besigye arrested – TomoNews

KAMPALA / UGANDA — Voters lined up outside polling stations across Uganda on Thursday. President Yoweri Museveni hopes to beat out seven other challengers in order to extend his 30-year rule.

Museveni’s top challenger Kizza Besigye was arrested briefly on Thursday after alleging security forces were using a house to rig votes.

Earlier in the day, Ugandan police fired tear gas upon voters protesting at polling stations after long delays in paper ballot deliveries. Ballot boxes arrived 5 hours late at a polling station in Kyebando.

As if that wasn’t enough drama for one election day, Museveni then blocked access to Twitter, Facebook, and Whatsapp because, according to the president, “Some people misuse those pathways. You know how they misuse them – telling lies.”

Opposition candidate Amama Mbabazi then tweeted instructions to circumvent the social media shutdown.

Incumbent president Museveni is expected to win but will need at least 50% of the vote to avoid an additional runoff election.

Results will be announced on Saturday.
