The media is awash with stories of women and girls who have been sexually harassed or even raped. However, the reporting of these stories in both traditional and online media platforms leaves much to be desired. In most cases, only sexual harassment incidents considered to be newsworthy according to media standards are reported where scandalous allegations and overtly sexualized conduct are emphasized. Sometimes, not even the victim’s identities are hidden! Violence against women is rarely presented as the systemic issue that it is, hinged on patriarchal norms and attitudes.
It is therefore not surprising that a sector.
